The book that Professor Gerrit Grijns received on his retirement in 1935, Researches on Vitamins, 1900-1911, was recently donated to Special Collections. Gerrit Grijns was an Animal Physiology professor in Wageningen from 1921 to 1935.

Professor Gerrit Grijns

Gerrit Grijns became a professor of animal physiology at Wageningen University (Landbouwhogeschool) in 1921. He taught and did research until 1935. Gerrit Grijns was, together with Nobel Prize winner Christiaan Eijkman, the person who discovered vitamins. From 1929-1930 he was Rector Magnificus of the Landbouwhogeschool Wageningen.

Researches on Vitamins

The book Researches on Vitamins was written by Gerrit Grijns himself. On Grijns' retirement in 1935 it was republished by publisher J.Noorduyn & Zoon. A translation and edited version of his thesis was added also to the book. This was an initiative of several scholars, all of whom signed the book to honour Gerrit Grijns. The book, a unique copy, bound and gilt-edged, has now been donated to the Special Collections of Wageningen University & Research.
