Open up your paywalled publications

WUR Library has developed an easy tool to make paywalled scientific publications available in Research@WUR: the Taverne tool. This tool has recently been extended. In addition to sharing peer-reviewed articles, you can now share your peer-reviewed book chapters and conference proceedings published from 2020 onwards.

Taverne implementation at WUR

The tool is based on the Taverne amendment in the Dutch Copyright Act. This amendment allows authors to open up their paywalled short scientific work six months after (online) publication. Authors may do this regardless of any publisher restrictions. WUR Library started the practical implementation of this amendment at the end of 2020.

Since the start more than 300 WUR articles have been made full-text available in Research@WUR. This has raised the WUR Open Access percentage of peer-reviewed articles published in 2020 by more than 5%. The Taverne Amendment is one of the routes you can take to comply with  WUR’s Open Access policy.

Taverne tool and workflow

If you want to open your closed publications in Research@WUR under the Taverne Amendment, you need to authorise WUR Library to do so. The Taverne tool automatically shows all your publications that can be shared through a customized participation form. You can select your preference per publication. You can select peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and conference proceedings published from 1 January 2020 onwards.

Here you can find more information on the Taverne tool and workflow, including the conditions for participation. Filling in the form will take about 2 minutes.

Contact & advice

If you have any questions or if you miss a publication in the Taverne tool, please contact the Open Access team of WUR Library. We’ll check if it is covered by the amendment and will make it publicly available if possible.
