Paintings Professors and Rectors

Photos of 39 portraits of some rectors and professors of Wageningen University and its predecessor, the Agricultural University of Applied Science (Landbouwhogeschool). The original oil paintings are on display in the Aula of Wageningen University.

The portrait collection holds oil paintings of 23 rectors. The other portraits depict professors who were appointed at Wageningen University.

The portrait collection starts with Cornelis J.M. Jongkindt. Jongkindt was the first director of the State Agricultural College in Wageningen in 1876, as well as a teacher in agriculture. After Wageningen became an institute for academic education in 1918, a new rector was appointed every school year. They would also continue their original professorial posts.

During World War II, professors M.F. Visser and W.C. Mees were rector for several years. After 1956, rectors were appointed for a period of years, quite often at the end of their scientific career. Of the total of 42 rectors, only 23 have been portrayed.
