The lexicon '1001 vrouwen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis' (1001 Women from Dutch History) has been selected as the Best History Book of All Time. Our colleague Liesbeth Missel is one of the contributors.

The Historisch Nieuwsblad organized the selection of the Best History Book of All Time. The top 10 titles were selected from a list of 250 books. '1001 vrouwen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis' was chosen as number one. The lexicon is edited by the historian Els Kloek.

The book, a lexicon with 1001 biographies, tells the stories of famous and infamous, loved and hated, remarkable and influential women during a thousand years of Dutch history.

Three hundred experts contributed to this book. Liesbeth Missel, Curator Special Collections of WUR Library is one of the contributors. She wrote the biography of Alida Withoos, a 17th-century painter. Special Collections holds several original botanical drawings by Alida Withoos.

The book '1001 vrouwen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis' is available in print. There is also an online version, 'Digitaal vrouwenlexicon van Nederland'.

The drawings of Alida Withoos are available in Wageningen University & Research Image Collections. You can download them for free.
