Q: What do I do when the amount of copyrighted material that I want to use is more than 50 pages or 25% of the book or journal issue?
A: If you need to use more than 50 pages or 25% of a book or journal issue, and the Library does not have a subscription to the journal allowing the use of larger portions, you have a few options:
- let your students buy the book
- submit a request for permission to use the material to Stichting UvO (formerly Stichting PRO)
To request for permission, go to the website of Stichting UvO. Please be aware that you need to arrange permission for each new academic year and for each individual course. Stichting UvO takes into account the number of students in your course. You will pay about € 0.20 per page per student in your course. The costs will be paid by your group unless you can make other arrangements with the students.
Q: How can I make agreements with a publisher? Does the Library help me?
A: If you want to use more than 50 pages or 25% of the total book or journal issue, you can also opt to make an appointment with a librarian to help you get permission from the publisher concerned.
However, in practice, it can be very difficult to make arrangements with
publishers about using large parts of books in an electronic learning
environment. Publishers usually impose strict conditions on the number of students who may view the document and the period of visibility. Please check first if there are no other solutions.
