Dennis Oonincx is a researcher for the Animal Nutrition Group at the Department of Animal Science of Wageningen University. Driven by curiosity towards the nutrition of reptiles he studied animal sciences and specialized in animal nutrition. During this time his interest in insects, their production, and their nutrient content developed. This path led to a PhD at the Laboratory of Entomology of Wageningen University on insects as food and feed, focusing on environmental sustainability and nutrient composition. During subsequent postdoctoral studies he worked on a variety of aspects connected to insect production. This included safety aspects (mycotoxins and heavy metals), adaptation of nutrient profiles (minerals and fatty acids) and effects of UV radiation on insect behavior and composition. Current research projects are focused on 1) UV radiation and its (beneficial) effects on insects, 2) nutrient upcycling from waste streams and 3) nutrient requirements of insects.
