To date my research career has focused on the rumen microbial ecosystem: exploring its diversity, structure, dynamics and mechanisms by which it can be beneficially perturbed to enable improvements in the sustainability and environmental footprint of ruminant livestock production.
Currently I am broadening my mammalian herbivore research interests to the equine hindgut - with a particular focus meantime on the anaerobic fungi (https://www.wur.nl/en/project/Equine-Anaerobic-Fungi.htm).
I also co-ordinate an international network of anaerobic fungal researchers (www.anaerobicfungi.org).
