The subject of my PhD project is an economic evaluation of breeding programs in European aquaculture.The species of interest are: Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, gilthead seabream, European seabass, turbot and common carp. A bio-economic model has been developed for the derivation of economic values in aquaculture species. This model is used to derive economic values for the above mentioned species. Using these economic values, benefits of a breeding program are predicted from the selection response on various traits. Data from our partners in Fishboost are used for benefit-cost analyses on breeding programs. Different selecion indices are compared for the economic optimization of breeding programs.
For Wageningen Livestock Research, I participate in applied research on selective breeding in aquaculture, am involved in the development of new breeding programs, and provide support to existing breeding programs.
