Senior Researcher

I am a senior researcher at the Division and Associate professor at the UMC Utrecht Brain Center, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. I trained in Behavioral Biology at Utrecht University after which I started my career in food-related (neuro)imaging at the Image Sciences Institute (UMC Utrecht) where I investigated whether biomarkers of satiety could be established in the human brain using functional MRI. After that I engaged in more and more multi-disciplinary projects that mainly involved food-related neuroimaging. In the past years I set up a research line on MR imaging of stomach emptying and digestion. A central theme in my research is the decision to eat, which is taken in the brain on the basis of multiple neural as well as hormonal signals. My research interests include food-gut-brain interactions, the neural correlates of taste, satiety and (un)healthy food choice, anorexia nervosa, obesity, and in recent years gastric digestion.

I am Associate Editor of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) and the Nutritional Neuroscience journal.
