The ProMO-study is a Dutch intervention trial designed to investigate the effects of a novel oral nutritional supplement on lean body mass, muscle function and physical performance of malnourished older adults. The study takes place at the Wageningen University between July 2016 and June 2017.
Malnutrition is still common in the Netherlands. Over 10% of people aged over 75 years is malnourished. Malnourishment has a negative impact on physical performance, immune function, wound healing and other clinical parameters. This leads to decreased mobility and independence, and longer hospitalization.
Due to a decrease in appetite and increase in satiety, energy intake decreases on average by 20% between the age of 26 and 70. Besides this decreased energy intake, muscle protein synthetic response is blunted in older adults. Together, these phenomena lead to an age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength.
Nutritional interventions are important tools in counteracting malnutrition. Different nutritional substances are found to improve lean body mass.
The ProMO-study aims to investigate a novel nutritional supplement which combines multiple promising ingredients to increase muscle mass, improve muscle function and to tackle malnutrition.
