The need for a biobased economy is driven by the depletion of fossil fuels, environmental pollution and energy shortages. In the future waste needs to be used as a sustainable feedstock. The challenge lays in the conversion of biomass waste streams into valuable products in an economical way. Microbial electrosynthesis might prove to be a new cost-effective process for this purpose. It produces clean and in an efficient manner high-value fuels and chemicals from CO2 or low-value waste.
This project aims at the development of a microbial electrosynthesis system for the production and/or conversion of volatile fatty acids.
