Vidi grants for innovative research have been awarded this year to Leonie Bentsink (Laboratory of Plant Physiology) and Rinke Stienstra (Division of Human Nutrition). The Vidi grant – a maximum of eight hundred thousand euros, awarded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) – will enable the Wageningen researchers to develop their own line of research.
Bentsink’s Vidi will enable her to perform further research on an amazing new discovery that resting a great deal shortens rather than extends the life of plants seeds.
Stienstra is trying to unravel the cause of infections in the fat tissue of people who are overweight. It is possible that these infections, which precipitate the development of diabetes, are triggered by problems with the shedding of old fat cells.
