Professor Willem de Vos discovered in 2014 the 'slimming bacterium' Akkermansia muciniphila, which helps mice to prevent obesity. Now he has administered this bacterium to humans for the first time in a dietary supplement. He did this together with colleagues from the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL). The test results are good: it was possible to safely administer the bacterium and the bacterium also appears to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in humans.
