On Friday November 8, 2019, our former PhD student Fred van Geenen received the Kolthoff Award for the best PhD thesis in analytical chemistry. His thesis entitled Ambient Laser Ablation electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging was selected by an independent expert committee based on criteria such as novelty, originality, quality, productivity and potential impact. This biannual award of the Royal Dutch Chemical Society (KNCV) is named after Isaac Kolthoff,  the founder of analytical chemistry as a scientific discipline. Four years ago, our former PhD student Susann Ludwig also won this highly prestigious award.
