Vacancies at Wageningen University & Research

PhD Experimental Molecular Genetics

We are looking for

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated PhD candidate with a strong background in or affinity with experimental work in molecular genetics. Candidates should be proficient with wet lab skills, be fluent in English (both written and spoken), be proactive and independent, and be team players.

Systems biology studies biological systems (eg. organisms) as a whole. Various computational strategies are used to integrate biological data and create models of systems like the metabolism of bacteria. These models are then used to improve the properties of the organism of interest towards something that meets the criteria of the end user.

The project EmPowerPutida aims at changing the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas putida into the ultimate whole-cell biocatalyst. The candidate will be involved in circuit building by editing the genome of Pseudomonas or possibly other bacteria. This process will be driven by models that will be designed by a computational scientist. After testing the engineered strains, the models will be improved and further editing can be done. In this way, a bacterial strain can be created that is able to survive the harsh conditions of industrial bioreactors and produces the product of choice.

We ask

For this position we request a proficiency with molecular genetics, especially the associated wet lab skills, and a sound knowledge of microbial genetics, physiology and biochemistry. The candidate is required to have an MSc in Biotechnology, Bioprocess engineering, Microbiology, Molecular Life Sciences or related fields.

We offer

We offer you a temporary position for a period of 1.5 years with extension of 2.5 years after successful evaluation. Gross salary per month € 2173,- in the first year rising up to € 2778,- per month in the fourth year.

We not only offer a competitive salary but also good (study) leave and a pension of the ABP Pension Fund.

We are

Systems Biology is one of the spearheads of the Wageningen University & Research, which invests considerably in this area. The mission of the Laboratory of Systems and Synthetic Biology is to contribute to the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying basic cellular processes, evolution and interactions among microbes and between microbes and their environment (including the human host) and to translate this knowledge into applications of biotechnological, medical and environmental interest.

The Agrotechnology & Food Sciences Group is part of Wageningen University & Research where fundamental and applied sciences complement each other. As an important European player, we carry out top-level research and work alongside authoritative partners within the international business world as well as the government on “Healthy food in a biobased society”. We have a crucial role in innovations within the market. Entrepreneurship and professionalism are what define us. In short, we are an interesting, international employer of stature.
