At January 10 2022, the online conference ‘Reducing antimicrobial use in European Livestock Production’ has taken place, organized by The Schippers Group and The Healthy Livestock project.

During the conference, leading scientists and practitioners talked about the contribution of enhanced animal health and welfare to reduce the need for antimicrobials in pigs and poultry. Reduction of antimicrobial resistance through these principles is the main goal of the research programme within the Healthy Livestock project.

Prof. Dr. Bas Kemp of the Adaptation Physiology Group from Wageningen University and Research (WUR) presented ‘Four strategies to reduce the use of antimicrobial on farms, The Healthy Livestock approach’ and his main conclusion was that effective reduction of antimicrobial use on farms needs a joint 4 strategy approach: solid biosecurity protocols, stimulating resilience of animals, early detection by PLF techniques and precision medication.

The conference can be viewed via the Healthy Livestock website, where more information about this project can be found.
