In memoriam Prof. Dr I Gede Suparta Budisatria

While driving from Yogyakarta to Jakarta Indonesia to collect his visa for a visit to the Netherlands and Wageningen, Professor Gede got involved in a car accident and his injuries were so severe that he passed away on the way to the hospital on November 4^th 2021.

Professor Gede got his MSc and his PhD at our Animal Production Systems group. His PhD thesis, which he defended in 2006, was entitled ‘Dynamics of small ruminant development in Central Java Indonesia’. After his return to Indonesia he made a scientific career at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta. Recently, he became Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry. The connection between UGM and our chair group was very strong which was reflected in frequent staff visits, joint proposal writing, PhD projects, and guest lectures.

Professor Gede was a committed scientist and a very kind person with a great heart for farmers and for their small ruminants. His sudden passing is very sad for his wife and children, for his colleagues in the Animal Husbandry faculty and UGM, and for us at Wageningen University. We wish all strength in these days of sorrow.
