At the very start of 2019, container ship MSC Zoe lost about 300 containers in the North Sea when sailing near Terschelling and Ameland. Even now, consequences of the disaster can still be observed in the sea. Dr. Edwin Foekema, researcher at WMR and at MAE, studies the impact of the lost containers and particularly the effects of microplastics. He uses mesocosms to study the effect of different concentrations of microplastics on various marine life. At Sunday June 28th he was interviewed by radio NPO1 about his research.
