Life Cycle Assessment

The Environmental Systems Analysis Group provides the possibility for students to do their thesis in collaboration with our group. This is one of many possible thesis subjects. Please feel free to contact Dr Steinmann (right) for more information.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool that aims to quantify the environmental impacts of a product system over its full life cycle. This is done by taking into account all processes from resource extraction to waste disposal (cradle-to-grave) or re-use (cradle-to-cradle). Many different environmental impacts can be included in an LCA, ranging from global impact categories (carbon footprints) to more local indicators such as land use.

LCA is used as a tool by many companies to quantify the environmental impact of their products. This assessment can then be used to identify areas for improvement, to compare different products with the same function or for communication/advertisement purposes. LCAs can also be performed for larger entities than single products, such as companies or even entire cities. Any of these applications can be suitable thesis subject. Examples of previous theses include a comparison of a plant-based and a meat based burger and an LCA of the potato production chain on Cyprus.
