Our course FEM22306, Forest Resources, coordinated by Ute Sass-Klaassen, and supported by many FEM staff members with lectures and practicals won one of WURs Excellent Education Prizes 2021 in the category Basic courses before Corona. FEM also had a substantial contribution to another awarded course: Ecological Methods I (REG31806), coordinated by Fred de Boer from the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Group.

It was the 5th time that our Forest Resources course was awarded! Very motivating to get prepared for period 1, when we expect to meet around 100 students in the new version of the Forest resources course (a bit concerning as well because keeping standards high gets more and more difficult... ).

From the jury report:

FEM22306 (Forest resources). This is a thorough and broad course with a great diversity of topics, many teachers, guest speakers and teaching methods. Despite that, it is still a coherent course with a clear aim and demarcation and highly appreciated by the participating students. Also, examination and assessment strategy is well explained. The teachers managed to combine many teaching-activities (including excursions, practicals, discussions with peers, reports and written exam) without asking too much from the students. The small reports that had to be submitted after each (very diverse!) excursion stimulated the student to actively participate and reflect. Furthermore, the guest speakers were very relevant and diverse in background. The enthusiastic teachers made this a very inspiring course for students.

During an online ceremony on June 22, WUR has awarded nine courses given during the academic year 2019-2020 with the Excellent Education Prize 2021. All 22 nominations received a statue. The coordinators of the nine winning courses received a bigger version of this statue as a token of honour that comes with this Prize. Read more
