On 30 October 2019, scientists and representatives from breeding companies and the Dutch government gathered to discuss the opportunities to do plant breeding for crop mixtures, during the workshop 'Breeding for Diversity' on the Wageningen UR campus.

In crop mixtures, different crop species are grown together on the same land, which requires different plant traits for optimal performance than for typical monoculture stands. The challenges associated with breeding for such diverse systems were presented by WUR scientists and breeding companies, and subsequently discussed in groups. The outcome of the workshop in terms of opportunities, challenges and priorities in the domain of breeding for diversity will be collected in a forthcoming paper.

Dr. Jochem Evers of the Centre for Crop Systems Analysis was one of the organizers of this workshop.
