Work by Thomas Awio, a PhD student in CSA, was recently featured in the Global Plant Council Blog. He highlights options to improve smallholder production of lowland rice systems in his recent publication in Agronomy.
Meeting the staple food demand of the growing population of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is a major challenge for SSA governments, where average crop yields are generally lower than the rest of globe. To meet this growing food demand, there is need to increase crop yields per unit area. This research blog post presents a summary of recent study that indicates good agronomy under adequate water supply as a starting point for smallholder rice farmers to profitably increase grain yields.
