Florian Kiesow Cortez joins the Law Group and ENP

Dr. Florian Kiesow Cortez is a researcher at the Wageningen Centre of Sustainability Governance, a collaboration between the chair groups Environmental Policy and Law at Wageningen University & Research.

Kiesow Cortez is an institutional economics scholar specialized in comparative political economy. He has extensive international experience acquired at academic institutions and international organizations in the Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Indonesia, and the USA. At WUR, Kiesow Cortez pursues postdoctoral research on the governance of AI technology in the EU, paying particular attention to environmental aspects and sustainability goals enshrined in the European Green Deal.

Dr. Kiesow Cortez received his doctorate in economics, magna cum laude, from the University of Hamburg and his doctoral research was fully funded by the German Research Association (DFG). He previously worked with interdisciplinary and international teams at University of Groningen’s Department of International Relations and International Organization, at University of Kiel’s Department of Economics, at George Mason University’s Department of Economics, at University of Marburg’s Chair of Institutional Economics and gave guest lectures for Leiden University’s Honours College Tackling Global Challenges programme.

His research expertise comprises global environmental governance, global public goods, the design of international organizations, and the regulation and impact of emerging technologies. His most recent publications include his book “The Political Economy of International Agreements” by Springer, in which he applies quantitative methodology to analyze patterns of international treaty ratification. Dr. Kiesow Cortez previously held visiting researcher appointments at renowned institutions including UC Berkeley in California and Columbia University in New York.
