Food security

One of the goals of the United Nations’ Millennium Declaration is to end hunger, or more specifically: ‘To halve, by the year 2015, the proportion of the world’s people who suffer from hunger (compared to 1990).’ Humans need to be able to eat sufficient amounts of good quality food in order to keep themselves healthy. Global food prices are rising due to climate change, the economic crisis and political instability, among other causes. Food security is a global issue, but politically it is also relevant on a regional scale. To what extend are the Netherlands or the European Union self-sufficient when it comes to food production?
