New technologies are used in a variety of ways across the spectrum of the agro-food sector. These technologies can be divided in: Genomics, robotics, informatics, and nanotechnology. Genomics means research into genomes, the combination of all hereditary factors, including DNA-research. Robotics revolves around robot technology, design, and application. Informatics is information science, information processing and the design of information systems. Bioinformatics refers to the application of informatics to the field of molecular biology. Nanotechnology studies the molecular and atomic scale. It deals with structures smaller than 100 nanometre (10-9m, or 1 millionth of a millimetre).
