The organic pig sector needs insight into the potential for antibiotic-free production. Within the Co-Innovation programme CLEAR, this project explores opportunities for cooperation with a conventional pork chain.
Antibiotic-free production in the organic sector can be achieved by eliminating the preventative use of antibiotics and by appropriate management strategies aimed at preventing disease outbreaks. Integration within the chain provides farmers with economic incentives to might help to avoid the use of antibiotics. There are a number of conditions. First, all animals should be assured of adequate medical care to prevent harming their health and wellbeing. Second, antibiotic-free production should be in balance with economic performance. And third, the measures that lead to antibiotic-free production should be socially valued and accepted. This project will be carried out in phases and will start with experiments on organic pig farms.
