Project

GreenCHAINge 5: Pear

Facilitating the long-distance export of pears by improving the quality management in the chain. That is the objective of this subproject.

Russia’s boycott over the past few years has provided an additional impulse to the Dutch fruit sector to export to new distant destinations. To be able to successfully provide distant markets with top-quality pears, more knowledge is needed about the ideal output quality and chain conditions to improve their shelf life.

Wageningen Food & Biobased Research and other stakeholders will develop new methods and protocols through experiments, transport simulations, and chain monitoring. The data from the research will be used for the development of a model that will help predict the quality in the chain. This model can support business decisions.

Expected results

  • Insight into market needs: market demand and quality standards;
  • Insight into market needs: market demand and quality standards; Methods for determining the starting quality (biomarker), which can be used to determine the suitability for transport to distant destinations;
  • Methods for improving shelf life in the trade channel;
  • Transport protocol: determining optimal transport conditions in reefer containers (temperature, packaging, treatments, duration, etc.);
  • Model for chain quality prediction based on expert knowledge and data from practice;
  • Survey of the current chain conditions, and recommendations for improvement.
