Adaptation of the landscape for biodiversity to climate change, Case study Kent (part of INTERREG III Funded project “BRANCH”)


Develop and apply a method for designing a climate change proof ecosystem network in Kent.


The objective of this study was to asses the effects of climate change in relation to habitat fragmentation in Kent. For this purpose, we linked a predictive modelling approach based on climate envelopes at the species level (SPECIES model) with ecosysteme netwerk cohesion assessment methodolgy (SMALLSTEPS/LARCH models).We developed an interactive planning method for planning climate proof ecosystem networks at a county scale, in which we used the modelling results. In on this case-study, we developed a generic method to plan climate change proof ecosystems networks, in which detailed modeling results are not required.

Added value for the customer

In general, the BRANCH Case study project promoted the importance of adapting to climate change using spatial planning systems in Kent amongst a wide range of stakeholders. The process brought together spatial planners, policy makers and scientists, assess the impact of climate change on inland ecosystems and to jointly develop a perspecive on climate change proof ecological networks in Kent.
