Activities IPM - DPRK
The Netherlands is the world leader in potato breeding and seed potato export with advanced systems for seed and ware potato production established a long time ago. Since the goal of the program is ultimately to improve potato productivity in DPRK, it will be useful for DPRK scientists and managers to be exposed to the different aspects of the Dutch organic potato sector, such as late blight control programs, breeding, and seed and ware potato production. Subsequently in country training for two years will be implemented in DPRK.
Activity 1 - International Potato Course in the Netherlands
In June 2010 (estimated to be Month 6), two staff members of AAS/ MoA will participate in the International Potato Course organised by Wageningen International, in Wageningen, the Netherlands.
Activity 2 - Study Tour organic potato growing
After attending the Potato Course, the two DPRK participants will be introduced to organic potato production in the Netherlands during a tailor-made study tour. The study tour will last one week in July 2010.
Activity 3 and 4 - In country courses potato DPRK
Activity 3 and 4 are in-country courses situated in either the lowlands or the highlands of the DPRK.
Activity 5 - Support for the “sandwich PhD” program
Wageningen UR commonly educates students to a Wageningen PhD degree with students from developing countries only spending part of their time in Wageningen. This program fits the needs of DPRK very well, as it would allow the creation of a truly long term and mutually beneficial relationship between AAS and Wageningen UR, and move the country away from its academic isolation.
Activity 6 - Support local laboratory infrastructure
AAS is in need of a series of equipment involving among others, computers, flowhoods, ultra low -70 freezers, centrifuges, climate rooms, growth cabinets, downflow and laminar cross flow cabinets, pipettes, chemicals, and consumables.
Activity 7 - Communication
Cooperation with North Korea is a politically highly sensitive domain and communication activities should be in close agreement with the expectations of the local authorities in DPRK in order not to loose their goodwill.
