Opening of the Academic Year 2012/13

The year’s theme for the Opening of the Academic Year of Wageningen UR (University & Research centre) was ‘Future challenges’.

With the growing demand for healthy and nutritious food, it is becoming increasingly important to define the right agenda towards a balanced, ecologically-sound and sustainable food supply. Although each local, regional and national initiative contributes to the overall effort, the questions at stake transcend national and regional borders, and ask for a global approach.

From the renowned New York Academy of Sciences President & CEO Ellis Rubinstein held a key-note speech on the place of and priorities for our domain in a global perspective.

Martin Scholten, Managing Director Animal Sciences Group and IMARES Wageningen UR, focused on the challenges for the livestock sector and the role of research therein.
