Gut health

Optimal intestinal health and functionality is a prerequisite for sustainable animal production.

Feed intervention studies

The colonization of the intestinal tract and the morphologic and functional development of the gut is affected by environmental factors, such as the use of antibiotics, pro-(pre-)-biotics or diet composition. To address the impact of such factors, we perform experiments with pigs and chickens. In these studies we focus on maternal effects to the offspring and on nutritional effects in neonatal and adult animals. By the use of high throughput 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing and genome-wide host gene expression studies, we already demonstrated that the interplay between microbiota and host intestinal tissue during early life is important for immunological development and programming.
