War in Ukraine: food supply and food security
Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday 24 February. This has not only led to a humanitarian and military crisis, but also has had consequences for food prices and possibly the food supply in the long term. Dutch and European agri-food sectors (including the processing industry) are also being affected by the war or may be affected in the future.
The start of a crisis is always characterised by a great deal of uncertainty and insecurity. These are uncertain times for decision-makers in governments as well as in individual companies (both multi-national companies and individual companies). As a result, there is a great need for reliable information that can support decisions.
Effects on agricultural production and food security
The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) has asked Wageningen University & Research to map out the effects of this war on agricultural production and food security. This concerns both the short-term (first 6 months) and the medium to long-term consequences for the Netherlands, the European Union and the world.With the research that has been conducted and especially the research to be conducted in the future, we are trying to support decision-makers by providing and interpreting information. The results of the research can be found on this website, which will be updated as new information becomes available.
In the first phase of the research, an overview of the EU-27's trade relations with Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus was created. This overview is presented in the Impactanalyse oorlog Oekraïne (impact analysis of the war in Ukraine). A data application (dashboard in English) has also been developed, which users can use to request trade data that is relevant to them.
