“True and Fair Price” study begins

At the Bio Expo in Zwolle, the "True and Fair Price" (Echte en Eerlijke Prijs) study officially kicked off on Wednesday 23 January. The project provides transparency regarding what the price is for sustainable food products at every step in the chain. This enables it to contribute to the transition of our food production chain from primarily financially efficient to socially inclusive with sustainable, fair, and affordable foodstuffs for everyone.

This public-private partnership (PPP) is an initiative of Bionext, True Price, and Wageningen Economic Research.

The transition to sustainable production is not free. It comes with additional costs and risks. It has its perks, such as a consumer that is prepared to pay more, but also yields social benefits such as slowed climate change, cleaner water, lower health-related expenses, etc.

A fair price distributes these costs, benefits, and risks throughout the chain. At the moment, the primary producers (farmers) are getting the short end of the stick in that regard.

Determining the true price assists producers in creating products as sustainably as possible, encourages consumers to select the best product, and stimulates government bodies to go about the transition to sustainability in the right way.

Clear, widely supported methodology

In the True and Fair Price research project, sector organisations, businesses, banks, and research institutes collaborate on the development of a clear, widely supported methodology for calculating the true and fair price that is available to the public and can be used by everyone.

PPS True and Fair Price: background information

The concepts of a true price and a fair price have been developed over the past six years by True Price and Wageningen Economic Research. In the study, the Bionext foundation, True Price, and Wageningen Economic Research are joining forces with Rabobank, ABN AMRO, the EKO foundation, the Dutch Potato Organisation, GroentenFruit Huis, LTO Nederland, and the Vereniging Biologische Varkenshouders (association of organic pig farmers).

The research is being co-funded by TKI Horticulture & Propagation Materials and TKI Agri & Food.
