Project
Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) Booster
The purpose of the CSA Booster is to boost the development, marketing and adoption of Climate Smart Agriculture solutions in Europe along the food value chains of the dairy and meat sectors and the wine and fruit sectors.
CSA Booster 's ambition is to initiate a transition towards
more climate-resilient agricultural production in Europe's two
most important food value chains with high potential for
mitigating and adapting to climate change: the dairy and
meat sector and the wine and fruit sectors.
Climate Smart Agriculture is the collective name of solutions
and technologies contributing to climate mitigation or
adaptation in agricultural practice. There are many
technologies available or in development, but not exploited to their full extent.
CSA Booster develops a knowledge-driven business offering the following services:
- Online service for matchmaking of CSA solutions, including impact
- Assessment and subsidy support
- Assessment and optimization of food and feed value chains
- Climate finance services
- Influencing policies
- Extension, training and co-creation
The target groups for these services include farmers and cooperatives, large agr-food corporates, technology providers, investors and the public sector.
The CSA-Booster focusses on CSA solutions for food and fodder production in Europe. However, in the assessment of the solutions, and in the development of the business models, other segments of the value chain will be considered as well. CSA-Booster works in test regions in The Netherlands, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and connects technology providers in these regions to investors.
Development of a portfolio of Climate Smart Solutions
The CSA Booster is developing a portfolio of CSA solutions for the main climate-related problems in European agriculture. The portfolio contains information on the technology, market potential, main customer segments, impacts on CSA dimensions, known providers, barriers and opportunities, and existing applications. Technology providers can apply to add their own technology.
Examples of CSA technologies:

By adding specific feed additives for ruminants, CH4 emissions from enteric fermentation can be reduced by about 10-30%, and animal
productivity can be increased (e.g. higher milk yield).

LED lightning has a much lower heat load than conventional light sources, and is 30% more efficient. Using the benefits of LEDs for crop production (light spectrum, rapid adjustments of intensity) and redesigning the production systems offers possibilities to reduce the carbon footprint up to 45%.
