Climate migration: a hype or a reality?
This week assistant professor Ingrid Boas gave a masterclass to Dutch secondary school teachers of geography, history and sociology. The masterclass was part of an Education Conference of the Atlantic Committee which this year centres on the topic of migration and the EU.
Ingrid’s masterclass focused on an issue that is at the centre of current public debate, namely climate migration to the EU. The question she posed was whether climate migration is a hype or a reality? By focusing on the drivers of migration, Ingrid warned for an overemphasis of the role of climate change and argued for a more nuanced picture. She poses that the relationship between climate change, migration and conflict is often indirect and dependent on structural factors.
