ROBIN - Role Of Biodiversity In climate change mitigatioN

There is a need for quantitative information of the effects of climate change on the relations between biodiversity and ecosystem services and their socio-ecological consequences in developing countries in Latin America.

Climate change will alter the way we utilise land across the globe and will change the rate and balance of natural processes such as carbon sequestration. As a result, the ecosystem services provided by natural systems will most likely be diminished, with consequences for human wellbeing and economic productivity. The ROBIN project (Role Of Biodiversity In climate change mitigatioN) is using novel modelling techniques to assess these future climate impacts on a range of ecosystem services. ROBIN is a EU FP7 project centred on Latin America.  Its focus is on how policy can maximise carbon benefits (for REDD+ type schemes), while avoiding damage to biodiversity, other ecosystem services and preventing unforeseen consequences for human wellbeing and natural systems.


ROBIN Products Meeting REDD+ and CBD User Needs:

  1. Improved information on baselines for biodiversity and carbon accounting
  2. Strategies and tools for climate change mitigation for the implementation of REDD(+)
  3. Risks and uncertainties of climate change mitigation strategies e.g. for biodiversity .

ROBIN Deliverables;

  1. Database with biodiversity indicators
  2. Quantification of biodiversity indicators in maps
  3. Description of ROBIN indicators to quantify the impact of climate change mitigation policies adn management on biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well-being.
  4. Maps for Latin America with land use changes for the three selected IPCC scenarios
  5. Ecosystem services maps resulting from integrated land use modelling with vegetation and ecosystem models
  6. Assessment of ecossytem services beneficiaries for the national and local scales of the project, to be used to model how and where direct beneficiaries of ecosystem services will be affected
  7. Adapt the QUICKScan tool developed by Alterra to communicate project findings to policy makers, NGOs and other stakeholders in the EU and Latin America. The tool will allow data exploration, including comparison and trade-offs between ecosystem services and other indicators.
