Wageningen Food & Biobased Research investigates how IT can help consumers make healthier food choices. This allows the development of personal services, for example apps which provide digitally-based and personalized nutritional advice.

Scientifically-proven advice

Digital nutritional advice via a smartphone or tablet: consumers are using this more and more. Services are growing, but the advice is often too general, or contradictory and not always reliable. Wageningen Food & Biobased Research makes it possible to provide personal, digital, scientifically-proven advice. Whether a consumer is shopping online, with a tray in the staff restaurant, or want to order a take-away meal box.

Artificial Intelligence in food

Translating detailed product information and consumer data into concrete, nutritional advice? Wageningen Food & Biobased Research has all the knowledge and expertise required - from food data and models with the latest nutritional science insights, to Artificial Intelligence. We create algorithms in which personal data are linked to product characteristics and nutritional science information; naturally with respect for the privacy of the consumer. Apps and other digital systems can use our algorithms, for example when compiling recipes or generating alternative shopping lists.

Personalized nutrition and health

Create large-scale personalized food and health applications. That is the ambition of public-private partnership Personalized Nutrition & Health. In this consortium, Wageningen experts are researching, together with the TNO research institute and companies from the entire chain, into what technology and knowledge is needed for this. In the Smart Home project, an innovative IT concept is being developed to supply food and tailor-made medicines to vulnerable elderly people in their homes. In this project Wageningen Food & Biobased Research collaborates with meal suppliers, IT companies, healthcare providers and pharmacists. The question of how you help consumers to make healthy choices was central to the Intelligent Consumer Systems project (2016). The result: three prototypes for handy apps, including the Allergy Checker, the Recipe Checker and the Motivation Checker.
