In addition to natural biopolymers and biobased raw materials for polymer synthesis, living organisms can also create specifically designed biobased polymers. Wageningen Food & Biobased Research develops isolation and synthesis processes, as well as microbial production strains which can be applied in new functional polymers, biobased polymers with tuneable properties and biocompatible polymers with custom design.
Special polymers for advanced applications
Wageningen Food & Biobased Research selects and develops polymers with specific characteristics for advanced applications such as coatings, (bio)sensors, biomedical materials and cosmetics. Examples include adjustable mechanical properties, bioactivity, biocompatibility, or the material’s capacity to react to external stimuli such as changes of temperature, pH value or salt level.
Wageningen Food & Biobased Research is involved in developments regarding protein polymers, polylactic acid varieties, antimicrobial polysaccharides and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) with controllable fatty acid composition.
