Call for partners: Increasing the protein intake of elderly consumers

Adequate protein intake is especially important for elderly consumers, as protein metabolism decreases and muscle deterioration accelerates with aging. However, most older adults in developed countries do not get adequate protein, especially at breakfast and lunch.

This project places elderly consumers central, and aims to support increased protein intake throughout the day, across a broad range of product categories, and incorporating proteins from diverse sources. A human clinical trial will evaluate the absorption rates of various proteins within a food matrix, including evaluating variability between subjects. This consortium delivers innovative elderly-focused products as well as strategies and tools to provide personalized protein intake advice.

Targeted products and personalized nutrition strategies

Our physiological protein needs increase at older age due to changes in protein metabolism and most older adults experience difficulties in fulfilling their dietary protein needs. Furthermore, protein rich products that are commonly consumed by older adults often in one category (mainly animal-based protein). Recent work from WUR has also shown inter-individual variation in absorption of amino acids from protein rich foods. This consortium will develop targeted products and personalized nutrition strategies to support older adults in fulfilling individual protein needs.

Defining needs and delivering solutions

The overall aim of this consortium is to develop innovative product based strategies to support older adults in fulfilling individual protein needs.

Objective of each workstream:

  1. Defining product characteristics driving acceptance of protein foods
  2. Understand variance in absorption of current and new proteins in food matrix
  3. Perform consumer driven product development of protein rich products, containing new proteins
  4. Deliver personalized advice based on preferences, habits and absorption data.

Invitation to collaborate

This consortium is open for participation from product manufacturers, ingredient companies, and organizations working with elderly consumers. In return for in-cash and in-kind contributions to the project, partners can provide direction to the research and apply the findings in their field of use. Unfortunately we are not able to reply to solicitations from research institutes or enquiries from students related to this project.
