Assessing the in vitro liver toxicity of complex mixtures

This project aims to assess the effects of complex mixtures, particularly mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) (including mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH)) and petroleum products, on human liver cells.

MOH comprise a diverse group of mixtures of hydrocarbons containing thousands of chemicals, and are derived mainly from crude oil but also produced synthetically from coal, natural gas and biomass. Food packaging materials, food additives, processing aids and environmental contaminants such as lubricants are possible MOH sources contributing to exposure via food. MOH have been reported to cause liver toxicity in rats, but the toxicological relevance of these findings for humans is not clear.

The goal of this project is to obtain more information on MOH-induced liver toxicity, and will assess the possible (genotoxic) effects for MOH and petroleum products.
