Animal welfare throughout the entire chain
Animal welfare and health must be guaranteed throughout the entire chain: at the farm, during transport and during the slaughter process. Consumers want more and more information about the origin of products and the conditions under which animals are kept. The environment is also important: animal and human health is closely linked.
The experts from Wageningen Livestock Research conduct research into animal welfare and health throughout the entire chain. From livestock farming and transport to slaughter, retail and the environment.
Companies, organizations and governments can come to us with research questions. Together with partners we develop practical and innovative solutions.

Animal welfare and health
Wageningen Livestock Research has knowledge and expertise on various types of animals, from calves, poultry, laying hens and goats to sheep, pigs and cattle.
New husbandry systems
The worldwide consumption of animal proteins - meat, dairy and eggs - is growing strongly. At the same time, in many Western countries including the Netherlands, we see that a growing group of people want to be more conscious of the consumption of animal protein. A quality product from animals that have had good health, good welfare and positive emotions fits in with that desire.
Animal welfare during transport
Animals are transported both within the Netherlands and internationally. It is important that these transports take place safely and carefully, so that animals do not injure themselves, are not too hot or too cold and have sufficient rest and opportunities to eat and drink.

New market concepts
There is a growing market for products and concepts that consumers associate with quality and animal welfare. Consider organic meat and meat with a welfare label. A growing number of people are willing to pay more for animal products with extra attention paid to animal welfare.
