Grassland management as a measure for the reduction of methane & ammonia emissions
April 1, 2020 - Grass is a valuable product for dairy cows; with its energy, protein and structure. In addition to the nutritional value, it has many more functions for the soil, landscape and the welfare of cows. In this project we look at the function of grass in relation to the reduction of methane and ammonia emissions. -
Integrated crop-dairy systems as a solution towards circularity in agriculture
March 1, 2020 - PhD project by Lianne Alderkamp. Combining forage crops and temporary grassland with cash-crop production, can mitigate the environmental impacts of crop and dairy production and can contribute to the development of a resilient agricultural system. This study focuses on the regional integration of crop- and dairy production in the Netherlands. -
BovReg: Understanding cattle genomes
September 1, 2019 - The aim of BovReg is to identify functions in the cow genome that are relevant to the diversity and plasticity of phenotypes in cattle with respect to robustness, health and biological efficiency. -
To control Coccidiosis in broiler chickens
January 1, 2019 - Coccidiosis is an important health problem in poultry, caused by infections with a highly contagious intestinal parasite of the genus Eimeria. Eimeria infections in broiler chickens cannot be prevented, despite strict hygiene measures. Infection leads to disease in broiler chickens and thus impaired animal welfare. In addition, infection causes impaired growth and thus production losses, resulting in economic losses and increased environmental impact of the broiler sector. -
AquaImpact
November 1, 2018 - AquaIMPACT aims to integrate the fields of fish breeding and nutrition to increase the competiveness of EU's main aquaculture species while minimizing environmental impact. -
FutureEuAqua; Future growth in sustainable, resilient and climate friendly organic and conventional European aquaculture
October 1, 2018 - The overall objective of FutureEUAqua is to effectively promote sustainable growth of resilient, environmental friendly, organic and conventional aquaculture of major fish species and low trophic level organisms in Europe, to meet future challenges with respect to the growing consumer demand for high quality, nutritious and responsibly produced food. -
EELRIC: Eel Reproduction Innovation Centre
July 1, 2018 - EELRIC is a platform for the reproduction of eel and a home for an international consortium of partners sharing experience and collaborating to force breakthroughs. -
Implications of cow-calf contact for dairy cow and calf welfare
October 1, 2017 - PhD project by Margret Wenker. There are societal concerns about the early separation of dairy cow and calf. This project aims to investigate rearing methods with different levels and components of maternal care for effects on the behavioural and biological functioning of calves, as young animal but also later in life. -
Biomarkers of happiness and stress in dairy cattle
June 1, 2017 - PhD project by Louise Kremer. Animal welfare depends on their emotional experiences. Current methods to assess emotions in cows are still lacking validity. The aim of this project is to find an objective way to assess dairy cows’ emotions.
