Emission reduction of bioaerosols

In a number of regions in the Netherlands exist, by European standards, very high livestock densities and an increasing scale of intensive livestock farming. The outbreak of large-scale livestock diseases, structural problems with respect to planning and nuisance for neighbouring residents, have led to the introduction of the Reconstruction Act for concentration areas.

The goal of this project is the quantification of airborne emissions of pathogens from livestock operations, and the development of technical measures that mitigate pathogen emission from animal housings. This will be necessary to gain insight in the relationships between the vicinity of animal operations and risk for the public health of neighbouring residents. This research will provide information on the emission of pathogen emission from livestock operations and will help to assess relationships between animal production and public health risks. Technical mitigation measures will be developed that can be implemented if there are risks of pathogen emission and effects on public health.
