Manure
Worldwide, animal husbandry produces large amounts of manure. This is rich in minerals (phosphates, nitrogen, potassium), but also in proteins, fatty acids and other important organic compounds. Manure can be used as a fertiliser or energy source, or to make new products, including bio-based ones. However, it is not always used optimally and therefore can have an adverse impact on the environment.
Wageningen University & Research is investigating how minerals from animal manure, waste residues and artificial fertilisers can be used more efficiently in the Netherlands and other countries. An important aspect of this aim is reducing the impact of these materials on the environment and our surroundings. Wageningen University & Research is also analysing all the policies and legislation that deal with manure.
This dossier contains a selection of the most important results, developments and information relating to policy, manure application, the environment, processing and soil quality. You can also contact one of our experts on the subject of manure.

Training manual on manure management in the tropics closes knowledge gap
Extension workers in the tropics often lack the knowledge to advise farmers on proper manure management. A new training manual with focus on the tropics and subtropics closes this important knowledge gap. Read more

A car fuelled by cow manure
It may be hard to believe, but waste can increase its value and is in fact becoming a valuable raw material. Cow manure is one such example. It contains valuable minerals such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which are both needed for plant growth. Read more

Reducing climate emissions from livestock while improving food security
Reducing climate emissions is a global challenge. A recent study on manure management policies and practices in 34 developing countries revealed that knowledge and awareness are key barriers for practice changes. Read more

Land-applied contaminated manure another source of spread of Q fever
A spatial analysis of the Q fever outbreak of 2006-2010 has revealed that new research Q fever outbreaks are often linked with the land application of contaminated manure. Read more

Potentials of improved manure management on resource use efficiency and emissions at a global scale
Manure needs to be managed in order to minimize negative effects on the environment. Manure management pertains to all possible interventions along the chain starting with collection and storage and ending with land application, and their interacting effects on utilization. Read more

Manure Knowledge Kiosk: one-stop-shop launched for improving manure management
The newly launched Manure Knowledge Kiosk offers resources, knowledge and connections to support improved manure management. Good manure management is essential in recycling nutrients and organic matter for healthy and productive soils. www.manurekiosk.org offers to all stakeholders in the livestock sector a one-stop-shop to support and technical services. read more

Quick removal of manure out of the stable
The goal of this study was to develop a new sort of system for finishing pigs with daily indulgences of manure out of manure trays by under pressure. Read more

Reducing mineral fertilisers and agro-chemicals by recycling
FERTIPLUS will take up the challenge to identify innovative processing technologies and strategies to convert urban and farm organic waste to valuable and safe products for agriculture and allow industries to develop projects and provide adequate information on use and quality of the products. Manure management: data collection in support of resource use efficiency
A better re-use of manures can reduce harmful emissions of N and P to water bodies and of N and GHG’s to the atmosphere. It will concomitantly reduce the demand for finite resources such as land, rock P and the fossil fuel needed to produce N fertilizers. Read more
