Marine spatial planning

The North Sea is one of the most intensively used seas in the world with activities such as wind farms, shipping, sand extraction, fishing, oil & gas extraction, coastal development and aquaculture. The European 'Blue Growth' initiative foresees that this will only be extended further. Wageningen Marine Research identifies and develops scenarios, opportunities and possibilities, taking into account the costs and benefits, the user-friendliness and the impact on the ecosystem. To this end, we develop knowledge in the field of multi-use and an integrated risk-based assessment framework that can provide insight into the cumulative effects, and thus possible offsetting, of different forms of use.
