The amount of plastic in stomachs of fulmars washed ashore is used as an indicator of the severity of the litter problem in the North Sea. Governments use this as one of their Ecological Quality Objectives (EcoQOs) which set target values for an ecologically healthy North Sea and measure progress in achieving such objectives.
