Meeting for the 40th time to discuss nature conservation and fisheries management at Antarctica
The Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) started the 40th edition of their annual meeting last week. The first edition took place in 1982. Researcher Fokje Schaafsma attended the meeting of CCAMLR’s Scientific Committee, which advises an international commission about nature conservation and fisheries management. This Commission will meet in the coming weeks.
Virtual meeting
The Netherlands is present for the third time as an official member of CCAMLR. Normally, the meeting takes place in the headquarters of CCAMLR, located in Hobart, Australia. This is, however, the second year in a row that the meeting is taking place virtually due to travel restrictions resulting from the pandemic. A virtual meeting is a good alternative to an in-person one, although the down side is that it is hard to meet at a time of day that is convenient for all members around the world. Therefore, the meeting means night work for the Dutch delegation this year.
40 years of CCAMLR
In honour of the 40-year anniversary of CCAMLR, they posted a blog that provides information about several topics that are addressed during the meetings, including krill- and toothfish fisheries, ecosystem monitoring, Marine Protected Areas, by-catch, illegal fisheries in the Southern Ocean and the work that scientist do on board fishing vessels.
