Population estimates and catch advice for sustainable fishing
European fishing policy focuses on maintaining the biological riches of the sea. EU countries aim to enable sustainable and balanced use of ocean resources, with as little impact as possible from fisheries on marine ecosystems.
Scientists from Wageningen Marine Research represent the Netherlands as participants in project groups for the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES), which assesses the size of fish stock populations in the North East Atlantic region. These population estimates serve as the basis for the ICES advice on fishing opportunities. This advice is a key factor in the decision by the EU Fisheries Council on the annual catch quota.
IJsselmeer and Markermeer
Wageningen Marine Research produces annual population estimates for pikeperch, perch, roach, and bream in the IJsselmeer and Markermeer for the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. The government aims to work towards the recovery of fish populations in the IJsselmeer and Markermeer over a period of roughly 15 years.
