Tomorrow, our last survey week will start.

This blog is a  short update from the survey up to now. Over all, 61 hauls were carried out. 60 were valid, one invalid. Last Friday, we caught boulders and had to stop fishing after 6 minutes (picture: Arnoud, Rob and Jan cleaning the deck). We steamed a bit further and fished on a different location in the same rectangle.

The bottom temperature varies over the sampled area, the difference between the lowest and the highest temperature is about 10 degrees (picture: the instrument measuring temperature and salinity –CTD) . At deeper stations (> 60 m), sometimes a thermocline appears, which means that the temperature at a certain depth suddenly drops from eg. 15 degrees to 8 degrees (more info: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream/ocean/layers_ocean.htm).
