To deliver increased knowledge of the epidemiology and economic impact of Pepino mosaic virus in the EU context, such that an updated rigorous pest risk analysis can be performed to underpin the existing legislation and to help the consideration of any necessary amendments.
Pepeira main research objectives
- Assess the economic impact of PepMV on tomato crops
- Develop an economic model to determine overall economic impact in EU member states
- Determine biological and genetic characteristics of different PepMV isolates and strains and the best methods to detect and diagnose these
- Determine possible risks of all PepMV strains for tomato and other Solanaceous crops
- Develop a new EPPO protocol for detection and diagnostics for phytosanitary organizations and reference labs
- Draw up a revised EU wide Pest Risk Analysis
The Pepeira project is divided into several activities which are being coordinated by the Pepeira consortium partners:
- PepMV trials and economic impact: FERA, UK has coordinated the greenhouse trials over two full seasons to assess the economic impact of PepMV on late infected tomato crops. Replicate trials have been completed at four sites located in regions of intensive tomato production within the EU. The trial data have been combined with results from cost benefit analyses and an econometric model had been formed to assess the overall economic impact of PepMV to each member state.
- PepMV characteristics and occurrence: Aarhus University, Denmark has coordinated the determination of:
- The most important biological and genetic characteristics of the different PepMV isolates and strains present in the different EU member states
- The determination of the occurrence and spread of the different PepMV isolates and strains over the different EU member states
- The determination of the possible risks of PepMV strains and variants on tomato and other Solanaceous crops
- The determination of the risk of seed transmission in the spread of PepMV within the EU
- The development and evaluation of methods to accurately detect and diagnose all relevant PepMV strains and isolates.
- Risk assessment and diagnostic protocol: Julius Kühn Institute, Germany coordinated the evaluation and validation of the scientific data and methods generated in the above mentioned work packages in order to:
- Carry out a ring test of PepMV diagnostic methods and to use this data to write an EPPO protocol containing methods for the detection and diagnosis of PepMV
- Produce a revised EU-wide Pest and Risk Analysis for PepMV.
